Stanton Defeats Sectional Champ! JE is 3rd.
Verona, N.Y. - Paced by junior standout Cody Stanton, the Jordan-Elbridge Boys Cross Country squad took third place in the 'White Division' race at Saturday's VVS Invitational. Stanton was second overall and the 6th fastest time on the day, blitzing the hilly VVS course in 17 minutes and 11 seconds. Stanton defeated the 2007 AA Sectional Champ Steve Houghmaster by 13 seconds. League rival Chris Stogsdill was the race winner and the fastest runner on the day completing the 5 K course in 16.31. J-E was beaten by AA opponent West Genesee and league opponent Marcellus. J-E also beat Tully H.S. for the first time since 1999. Junior Mike Marrero and sophomore Greg Bader were next for J-E, both finishing in the top 20 of the race. Marrero was 8th in a time of 18.16 and Bader was 16th in 19.03. Bader was plagued with a cramp for over a mile of the race. Fellow sophomore Tom Poppe was 19th, a mere three places behind Bader (19.14) and ran the entire race with his 'puffer'. Rounding out the scoring was senior Kyle Becker was was 31st in a time of 19.56. The JV squad was also third in their race with freshman Steve Slonosky leading the way with a top ten finish (Slonosky finished 10th.). Slonosky's time was actually better than J-E's fifth man (19.41). In fact, four of the JV squad's top five runners beat varsity times. Derrick Cheney was 22nd (20.27), Carlin Coomey was 27th (20.32), Mitch Alpha was 37th (21.03), and John Flynn was 38th (21.03) to round out the scoring.
