The 2009 roster.....

Mitch and Derrick share more than memories during our first practice of 2009.

Cody Stanton - Senior;  Stanton is clearly J-E's # 1 man, and last year's team MVP.  Cody is the defending Section III Champ and the # 2 returner from States in Class C.  Stanton enters his senior year at J-E poised to take another individual and team sectional title.  In outdoor track, Cody ran 9.50 for the 2-mile, closing ever closer to the school record, and 4.50 for the 1600.  Stanton ran 13.24 at Van Cortlandt Park in October '08, the 4th fastest J-E time ever at the Manhattan College Invitational.  Cody's 180 speed rating in 2008 cross country make him one of the fastest individuals in Section III.  Cody was the anchor of the school record-setting Distance Medley squad that broke the 1998 state champions' record from 1999.  Stanton, Greg Bader, Mike Marrero, and Carlin Coomey set the J-E school record at the Chittenango Invitational in 11.12.61.

Greg Bader - Junior;  Bader is one of the most driven runners ever to run at Jordan-Elbridge and his 400 plus miles of summer training will attest to this.  Greg finished 11th in last year's Section III Championships (17.42) helping the Eagles to the co-championship of Class C.  Bader continued his excellence in track by running the 1600 in 4.43 (J-E Sophomore record) and the 800 in 2.07.  Bader holds the freshman record for J-E Track and Field in the 1600 set in 2007 (4.48).  Greg was a member of the record-setting Distance Medley squad that broke the 1999 state champions' record.  Bader, Mike Marrero, Carlin Coomey, and Cody Stanton set the J-E school record at the Chittenango Invitational in 11.12.61.

Tom Poppe - Junior;  Poppe, a junior, is a grizzled veteran and one of the team's key members.  Tom was 31st in the 2008 Sectionals finishing in 18.24.  Poppe was the J-E Cross Country Team's winner of the 'Fifth Man' Award for his key contributions into J-E's co-championship.  Poppe was the 7th fastest sophomore in last year's Sectionals.  Tom played JV Basketball and Baseball the past two sports seasons attesting to his 'all around athlete' label.  'Pops' had a .400 batting average last season on JV Baseball amassing 5 triples and 3 doubles while manning the catcher's position.  Poppe has his PR speed rating following the '08 Manhattan Invitational race where his 14.47 raised his rating to 146.

Kyle Alpha - Senior;  Alpha enters into his 6th year of competitive cross country running and his 4th on the varsity squad.  Kyle has competed in the 2007 Class C Sectional Championships finishing 110th (20.00) as a sophomore.  Kyle is currently in the top 7 of the squad all the while holding down the position as Drum Major on the decorated and celebrated J-E Marching Band.  If Kyle has enough races under his belt come the Sectional Championships, it is a good bet that he'll be battling for one of the Eagles' top five positions.

Carlin Coomey - Junior;  Coomey looms as an outside shot at making the Eagles' top five this season.  Competing in the Section III Championships as a sophomore, Carlin placed 95th (20.33).  Coomey was the team's 7th highest scorer in overall points.  Carlin's best race was his 14th place finish at the McQuaid Invitational in 17.59.  In track, Coomey is a burner running 54.8 in the 400 and 25.0 for the 200.  Coomey was a member of the record-setting Distance Medley squad that broke the 1999 state champions' record.  Coomey, Greg Bader, Mike Marrero, and Cody Stanton set the J-E school record at the Chittenango Invitational in 11.12.61.

Mike Marrero - Senior;  Marrero enters his senior campaign at J-E as a marked man after surprising everyone in last year's Section III Championships by finishing 4th in 16.55 and making the State Meet.  Mike finished 13th in the Class C State Meet (17.28) and is projected to be 8th in this year's State Meet.  Mike's personal best for 1600 meters is 4.43, and 10.14 for 3200 meters.  Marrero ran 2.08 in the 800 and 10.35 in the 3000 meter steeplechase.  Mike led off the record-setting Distance Medley squad that broke the 1998 state champions' record in 1999.  Marrero, Greg Bader, Carlin Coomey, and Cody Stanton set the J-E school record at the Chittenango Invitational in 11.12.61.  Mike is once again of of the captains of the Eagle squad and looks to lead the team to the promised land.

Steve Slonosky - Sophomore;  Slonosky is entering into his sophomore year but runs with more poise and stamina than most of his age.  The 2008 Cross Country season was a spectacular season for Steve as he finished 16th in the Section III Championships (17.53) and was the fastest freshman in the race and the 2nd fastest freshman on the entire day.  Slonosky holds the J-E Track and Field Outdoor freshman record for the 3000 meter steeplechase (11.13) and just missed setting the freshman 3200 meter record by running 10.40, just one second off of the school record.  Slonosky also set the indoor 3200 record in 11.03.  Steve looks like he may be able to crack the top ten in sectionals this season as he's looked very strong in workouts so far.

Derrick Cheney - Junior;  Cheney enters into his 2nd year of varsity cross country seeking a varsity position.  Derrick broke the 18-minute barrier at the McQuaid Invitational last year (17.59) by placing 15th in a very competitive JV race.  Cheney's best place of finish was at the Baldwinsville Invitational where he finished 4th leading the JV Squad to a first place plaque.  Derrick also has played two years of Varsity Lacrosse and was an Honorable Mention All Division player in 2009.  Cheney led the J-E Varsity in ground balls.  After a good summer of training, Derrick is in fine position to snare one of the squad's top 7 positions.

Mitch Alpha - Sophomore;  Alpha returns to the J-E Varsity Squad a year older and stronger, seeking another slot on the varsity '7'.  Mitch ran in Sectionals as a freshman placing 49th (19.02) which made him the 5th fastest freshman in Class C and the 21st fastest freshman on the day.  Alpha compiled an 8 - 3 record for the varsity wrestling squad at the 96 lb weight class, placing 2nd at Leagues.  Mitch was the 2008 cross country team's 8th scorer.

Rob Patterson - Sophomore;  Robby enters into his 2nd season of Varsity Cross Country seeking a birth on the Section III squad.  As a freshman, Patterson raced in 12 races at the varsity distance with his personal best being 20.16 for 3 miles.  Rob also ran 17.05 for 2.5 miles at the Manhattan College Invitational in 08.  In indoor track, Patterson's best time in the mile wa 5.41.  Rob finished 2nd in the Novice Mile at the Cayuga County Invitational in a time of 5.48.
